gantvag-mMikhail Gantvarg, a leading violinist of St. Petersburg for the last few decades, is a very noticeable and original person in the city music life. After winning a prize at the Paganini International Competition in youth, he built his reputation combining an intensive concert work together with being a principal violin at the St. Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra directed by Yuri Temirkanov.
In parallel with that, he started his teaching career at the St. Petersburg State Conservatory. He is one of the last successors of the legendary St. Petersburg violin school, which gave birth to a whole “constellation” of world famous violinists.
Mikhail Gantvarg is the founder of the world famous chamber orchestra Soloists of St. Petersburg. So far they have recorded and released more than 40 CDs, containing such capital works as complete violin and piano concertos of W. A. Mozart, monumental works by A. Vivaldi (Harmonic Inspiration, Fancies, Four Seasons), Beethoven's Great Fugue – unique for its great technical difficulties, Six Sonatas by G. Rossini, a series of Bach's instrumental concertos, etc.
Since 2011 Prof. Gantvarg is a Rector of St. Petersburg Conservatory.
