Opera Koštana by Petar Konjović, after the play of the same name by Borisav Stanković, premiered on the Main Stage on 14th June 2019 under the baton of Ana Zorana Brajović and directed by Jug Radivojević.
Thus, after six decades since the previous performance (last premiere held on 19th October 1959), one of the most popular national operas has become a part of regular repertory of the National Theatre. The plot of the opera originally takes place in the 19th century, but the new staging is contemporary with subtle Brechtian elements.
Soloists, the Orchestra, Choir, Ballet Company and “Borislav Popović” Opera Studio of the National Theatre in Belgrade take part in the performance.
This is the fifth staging of the renowned Serbian opera in the National Theatre, which at the time was performed throughout former Yugoslavia and in some European theatres.
Konjović’s opera Koštana, ‘a lyrical and vibrant poem of unaccomplished love passion’ in which ‘local colourful ambience of Vranje has been portrayed by lively colours of styled folk songs and by comprehensive and colourful folk dances’, while ‘one’s thirst for living and lamentation for one’s youth gets filtered through Balkan man’s psyche and labelled as “sevdah” and “lament for youth” has been given a superbly subtle and psychologically nuanced musical expression’, is considered to be the pinnacle of Serbian opera, even now, more than eight decades after the opera’s first performance at the National Theatre in Belgrade, when it was acclaimed to be ‘a significant date in our cultural history’.
