dejan mladjenovicViolist Dejan Mlađenović has performed more than 150 concerts in the last ten years, performing with significant chamber ensembles, symphony orchestras and in recitals with distinguished pianists in his native Serbia, France, Spain, Norway, Greece, Italy, Macedonia, Romania, Germany, Russia, Switzerland, the United States and Great Britain. He commands the instrument’s entire standard repertoire as well as many new works. To date, five significant viola concertos and many sonatas and smaller works have been composed and dedicated to him. Mr. Mlađenović is recognized as one of the Balkans’ finest violists – an artist whose marvellous expressivity, sonorous tone, and colour have won him praise by audiences and critics alike.
Born in Serbia, Dejan Mlađenović studied viola in his native country (University of Arts in Belgrade). Subsequently, he received a scholarship of the French government and attended Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique in Paris where he pursued advanced studies and completed a Master’s degree in viola performance with highest honours. He attended master classes in Siena (1986/87), again as a scholarship student, this time at the Academia Chigiana, where he studied with Gerard Caussé and Yuri Bashmet. In 1988 he went to Grožnjan and studied with Grigori Zhislin; in 1990 he studied in Paris with Jesse Levine; and in 1991/92 he studied with Emanuel Vardi and Rivka Golani in Great Britain. Besides his active career as a concert soloist, he currently serves on the Faculty of Music, University of Arts in Belgrade, as the full-time professor of viola.
His awards comprise a distinguished and impressive list ranging from Laureate Yugoslav Artist (1987), and Best Concert Performance of the year 1994 (Association of Music Artists of Serbia), to the Special Prize delivered by Yuri Bashmet himself at the International Viola Competition, Tchaikovsky Conservatory (1994). In addition, he has won on four different occasions first place awards for various performances at the International Review of Contemporary Music (Belgrade). Most recently (in 2007) he received the August Klein Distinguished Artist Award nomination by the International Music Centre of America (IMCA).

International critics are full of praise for Mr. Mlađenović’s playing:
• “… Mlađenović showed himself capable of quite big playing…” The Strad, 2002 (Wigmore Hall recital).
• “We were fortunate to hear him at the Jacqueline du Pré music building... the concert was truly memorable… Both pianist and the violist unleashed all their savoir-faire... Both players rose to the challenge magnificently.” Oxford Times, March 2004.
• “The performance of Dejan Mlađenović was grandiose, with a great security and intensive indulging. In addition to all that, he has a warm and full tone that gave additional dimension to the performance. We have not heard such an inspiring playing for a long time.” Sunnmorposten, April 2005.
• “Extremely refined, sonorous and colourful – the tone of Mlađenović's viola, with its low sounds and timbres of a cello as well as the heights of a violin, remained a constant throughout tonight's concert. He used this rare quality without reservation filling the tone of this instrument with personal emotions (...) Dejan Mlađenović had his “tour de force” in the interpretation of the Sequenza VI for viola solo by Luciano Berio. Everything that one string instrument, at least hypothetically, can play, is found in this expressive, fascinating composition. His interpretation had to be considered first-class by any violist…” Radio Belgrade, Third Program, February 2005 (“The Night of Premiers of Italian Music for Viola – A Recital”).
