The National Chamber Choir Madrigal - Marin Constantin is an emblem of Romanian and universal musical life. Since its foundation in 1963 by the legendary musician and conductor Marin Constantin (1925-2011), the Madrigal Choir has given hundreds of concerts applauded all over the world, establishing itself as a true country brand. It is one of the world standards of choral chamber music and the keeper of a unique concept, defined by its specific sound, stereophonic stage setting and imposing costumes. Its repertoire is directed towards the European Renaissance, Gregorian and Byzantine chant, traditional carols, but also towards classical and contemporary Romanian and universal compositions.
Today the National Chamber Choir Madrigal - Marin Constantin is a public concert institution of national importance, subordinated to the Romanian Ministry of Culture. The honorary director of the ensemble is the internationally renowned conductor Ion Marin, and since 2014 the management of the institution is coordinated by Emil Pantelimon. The main conductor of the Madrigal Choir is Anna Ungureanu - disciple and continuer of maestro Marin Constantin, and since 2016 the second conductor is Cezar-Mihail Verlan.
In November 2016 the National Chamber Choir Madrigal - Marin Constantin was officially recognized as an Ambassador of Freedom, Hope and Peace, receiving the Jean Nussbaum and Eleanor Roosevelt award at the United Nations Palace in Geneva, during the Global Summit on Religion, Peace and Security.
In 2019, in addition to the Extraordinary Christmas and Easter Tours and Concerts, true musical phenomena in Romania, the ensemble was an integral part of the concert La Cetra d'Orfeo Ay Amor! - a project conceived and conducted by Belgian musician Michel Keustermans in the George Enescu International Festival, and in November, the female voice parts (soprano and alto) joined the Hamburg Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Maestro Ion Marin, for the concert Doppelfenster: Beethoven und Pergolesi.
After a period of social distancing in 2021, the Madrigal Choir performed in Parma - Gala Concert during the International Choral Conducting Competition Romano Gandolfi and, in Bologna, the Extraordinary Concert on the occasion of Romania's National Day at the Basilica San Petronio, an event organized under the patronage of the Romanian Embassy in Italy.
In 2022, the Madrigal Choir was invited to join the Pierre Boulez Ensemble in Berlin for the chamber concert Pierre Boulez XLII - Stravinsky at the Pierre Boulez Saal, and in June, the ensemble enjoyed a huge success with the Extraordinary Concert Music of the European Renaissance in Zagreb, Croatia, at the invitation of the Romanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Romanian Embassy in Croatia and the Romanian Cultural Institute.
Creator of events par excellence, the Madrigal Choir held in Romania, in the complicated conditions of the year 2020, the open-air summer season with five concerts-performances, with different themes, repertoires, costumes and artistic approaches: Hora staccato, Madrigal sings to children, Music of the Renaissance, Choral Jewels and Ave Maria. In 2021, the ensemble performed no less than 15 musical events: 8 public performances, two national tours as well as 3 performances recorded and streamed online.
By September 2022, the Madrigal Choir has given in Romania three major concerts, each one of them with its own stage direction, scenography, light design and video mapping: the Extraordinary Easter Performance Easter Week - included in the national tour in four cities - Shakespeare - Sound and Word, within the 13th edition of the International Shakespeare Festival in Craiova, the Gala Madrigal 59 - 59 YEARS IN 59 MINUTES in Bucharest and the Extraordinary Concert Ave Maria with two performances in Constanța city. The Madrigal Choir has also performed two concerts in Slobozia city and Sfântu Gheorghe city.
Also, in recent years, the Madrigal Choir has released recordings of its famous Extraordinary Christmas and Easter Concerts, conducted by Anna Ungureanu and Cezar-Mihail Verlan, which can also be found free of charge on the newly created online Madrigal App-https://app.madrigal. ro/, as well as six new albums with Roton Music-three albums Madrigal de Crăciun / Madrigal for Christmas (for which he received the Golden Record), two albums dedicated to the Easter holiday-Ave Maria, conducted by Anna Ungureanu and Easter Week, conducted by Cezar-Mihail Verlan and the Romanian music album Hora Staccato, conducted by Anna Ungureanu.
Since 2011, the Madrigal Choir has been running the Cantus Mundi National Programme, the largest programme for the social integration of Romanian children through music, initiated by Maestro Ion Marin. A program that currently brings together over 1,800 choirs and over 60,000 children from the country and the diaspora.
At the same time, since 2021, the Madrigal Choir has been implementing a wide-ranging international communication and cultural diplomacy project, offering some of the world's countries their national anthems, performed to the highest acoustic and visual standards. Thus, in a single year, the Madrigal Choir will record more than 20 national anthems. The extensive programme also includes the release of a CD of these anthems during 2022.
