One of the best known Belgrade violinists Jovan Kolundžija, a one-time student of Petar Toškov and Henryk Szeryng, boasts more than four thousand concerts at home and abroad. Very well received were his ambitious projects: Magnificent Ten (ten violin concertos in only four days, 1994); Aimez-vous Beethoven (performance of all violin sonatas by Beethoven in four days) and Bravissimo Maestro Mozart (15 Mozart’s sonatas for violin and piano, 2009). Jovan Kolundžija is the founder of the Guarnerius Arts Center in Belgrade, named thus after the 1754 Guarneri violin Jovan Kolundžija has been playing over the last twenty years. Apart from performing activities, the artist devotes a great deal of his time to the promotion and education of young talented musicians in his artistic foundation Guarnerius Arts Center. It was that same spirit that gave rise to the idea of establishing the Youth Festival Orchestra, made up of students from secondary music schools from all over Serbia. The orchestra will be conducted by the renowned Croatian conductor Mladen Tarbuk and the young artists will try their hands in both the standard string repertoire (Bach, Vivaldi, Dvorak) and in a contemporary piece, Tirol Concerto by Philip Glass, which will for the first time be heard in Belgrade.

Contemporary American composer Philip Glass earned world-wide reputation with his opera Einstein on the Beach. His collaboration with artists such as Bob Wilson, Woody Allen, Allen Ginsberg or David Bowie, as well as his individual creative achievements (which include the original soundtracks for the Oscar-winning Hours by Stephen Daldry, and Kundun by Martin Scorsese) made an enormous influence on contemporary culture. The new music style Glass has been developing since the 1970s was labeled “minimalism”, but the composer himself never acceded to that term, maintaining that a more adequate term for his composing technique would be “music with repetitive structures”. Tirol Concerto has been commissioned by Klangspuren Festival in collaboration with Tourist Organization of Tirol and Stuttgart Chamber Orchestra. In this composition Glass for the first time used quotations from folk music. The world famous pianist and conductor Dennis Russel Davies, who premiered the Concerto in 2000 with the Stuttgarg Chamber Orchestra, comments: “I have played and conducted Philip’s music for 25 years... With each new work I have been increasingly impressed by the skill with which Philip has refined and extended the expressive possibilities of his musical language to move his listeners. Learning, practicing and performing the Tyrol Concerto has been a rewarding and exhilarating experience …"
